The Eden Rose: a rare diamond?
Under the sweet name of « The Eden Rose », a natural diamond of more than 10 carats will be auctioned by Christie’s the 11th of June 2024 in New York. It is estimated between 9 and 12 million US dollars and is a rarity because of its size, color, and impeccable quality in the world of diamonds.
Originally from the mines, its history is certainly not as rosy as its color. Indeed, Christie’s deliberately omits to mention its origin on its website. We can therefore ask ourselves what part of the globe it comes from and, above all, under what conditions it was extracted. Despite efforts made with the Kimberley Process in 2003, which proposes to certify diamonds that are not used to finance conflicts, there are many loopholes in this certification, and it is therefore not uncommon to find “blood” diamonds in the trade.
At AGUAdeORO, we deeply regret the lack of transparency regarding the origins of this diamond. We also wonder about the interest that this diamond can arouse in terms of price, knowing that it is now possible to obtain lab grown diamonds, including colored ones. Unlike most mined diamonds, these offer traceability and do not rely on cheap mining labor. We offer ethical jewelry whose precious stones are obtained in laboratories and have the same qualitative characteristics as natural ones. In addition, our gold is Fairtrade certified and does not participate in the questionable exploitation of gold ores and the people involved in this extraction.
This alternative allows buyers to take responsibility, thus becoming real players in this business by choosing their new jewelry with an enlightened eye. We therefore offer a real ethical possibility for those who do not wish to condone violence, whether physical, social, or ecological.
Lab-grown diamonds embody a new era of romance, standing in contrast to traditional gemstones. These gems, created under controlled conditions, allow couples to celebrate their love without the moral complications often associated with mining. By choosing a lab-grown diamond, they not only select a symbol of their commitment but also make a gesture toward sustainability and social responsibility. Thus, romance takes on a new meaning, where love and ethics intertwine to create precious memories, free from the shadows of the past.
AGUAdeORO is a jewelry store founded in 2009 and based in Geneva and Zurich, offering its customers the opportunity to buy ethical jewelry made in Switzerland. Our aim is to offer jewelry that combines sustainable development and elegance.
